This month we talked to Orlando Carvalho of Faria, Carvalho, Costa E Castro, RL (FCCC) in Portugal. He is the co-founder of the law firm, a member of the Judicial Committee of the Portuguese Professional Football League, and currently dedicating his time to two exciting projects.
At the national level, Faria, Carvalho, Costa E Castro has institutional partnership agreements with law firms based in the cities of Braga, Oporto and Lisbon. The firm’s international strategy reaches out to the Lusophone Countries in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe, providing representation in all CPLP countries (the Community of Portuguese Language Countries), as well as, partners in La Coruña (Spain), São Paulo (Brazil), Cidade da Praia (Cabo Verde), and Maputo (Mozambique).
In Portugal FCCC’s main office is situated in Braga, the 3rd biggest city of Portugal, and ‘European Sport City of the year 2018’. As a member of the Judicial Committee of the Portuguese Professional Football League, Orlando Carvalho is closely connected to sports himself.
Since 2006, Mr Carvalho has been serving on the Portuguese Professional Football League. At the moment, he is a member of the Jurisdictional Council, in charge of all legal issues, such as agreements between clubs regarding the transfer payments, the formation of young players, and solidarity mechanisms. Within his diverse positions, he has also acted as board member, responsible for International Relations.
As part of his membership of the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), he has assisted in the endeavour to enhance and protect the competitive balance in league competitions. The Association represents the Professional Football Leagues across Europe on all matters of common interest. In the course of his engagement, he has worked with the European Commission as a member of the ‘First Social Dialogue Committee on Professional Football’, a Committee formed by the EC to address the matter of ‘Professional Football as an economic Activity’.
Right now, Orlando Carvalho is working with Union of CPLP Exporters (Portuguese: União dos Exportadores da CPLP) an organization connected with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Portuguese: Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP). Initially, this multilateral forum was created to deepen the mutual cooperation and strengthen the cultural and linguistic area among its members. Recently, Union of CPLP Exporters, dedicated to the economic dimension of CPLP, was established in which Mr Carvalho is the Legal Coordinator. In this function he oversees two projects:
- Project 1: ‘Global CPLP Iuris’: an association congregating lawyers of all Portuguese Speaking Countries. The first steps were taken with success by forming a board, holding Conferences, and planning a forum including the public launch of the association.
- Project 2: An Arbitration Centre: a pipeline-project, aiming at an alternative resolution of disputes.
Within his firm’s partner network there is substantial interest in the Eurojuris International. To connect with one another, the idea of a meeting between the two networks is entertained at present. Keeping in mind, the global outreach of Lusophone Countries, including Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Orlando Carvalho’s current undertakings carry substantial unlocked potential. Without a doubt, to this connection to the Lusophone world shall be paid close attention.

CPLP is a multilateral forum privileged to deepen the mutual friendship and cooperation among its members. General objectives: the conservation of political diplomacy among its Member-States, reinforcing its presence in the international scenario; the cooperation in all matters, including education, health, science and technology, defense, agriculture, public administration, communication, justice, public security, culture, sports, and social communication; the implementation of projects that promote and disseminate the Portuguese language.
Lusophony (lusofonia in Portuguese): the community of people who are culturally and linguistically linked to Portugal. The idea of a Lusosphere is free of ethnic connotations, in that a Lusophone may not have any Portuguese ancestry at all.
Officially Lusophone Countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe.
